I don't have the birds issue but the sun rises right outside my room. Even with a sunblocker and thick curtains my room is still light enough for me to read in without pulling the curtains open at 7am. However this is my first apartment where I feel a little uncomfortable doing so. Reason being is because my next door neighbor has about 10 people in and out of her house and they can just peek right into my window to see what I'm up to - not so great! :( Therefore my window is down, except for right now because I'm pretty sure she is sleeping :) Sorry for the minimum amount of hours at work.
